Dagestan: A Comprehensive Overview

Location and Administrative Structure

Republic of Dagestan, officially the Dagestan Republic, is the southernmost republic within the Russian Federation. Located along the western coast of the Caspian Sea in the North Caucasus region, Dagestan is bordered by Azerbaijan to the south, Georgia to the southwest, the Chechen Republic and Stavropol Krai to the west, and Kalmykia to the northwest. As an autonomous republic within the Russian Federation, Dagestan has its own constitution and government but remains under the jurisdiction of the Russian federal government.

Historical Background

Dagestan's history spans thousands of years, with evidence of human habitation dating back to the Stone Age. The region has been influenced by various empires and civilizations, including the Persians, Greeks, Arabs, Mongols, and Russians. In the 16th century, Dagestan was incorporated into the Safavid Empire of Persia but came under Russian rule in the early 19th century following the Russo-Persian Wars. After the Russian Revolution of 1917, Dagestan became part of the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic. It gained its current status as a republic within the Russian Federation in 1991.
